This is an invitation to *you*, your local campaign group, or just a bunch of friends to get together and plan an event for the 3rd National No Shop Day to be held on Saturday 4th Dec 1993. This year it's become INTERnational NO SHOP Day!!! The aim of the day is to highlight the difference between what we need to live on and items we may want to buy but do not really need. As Gandhi said, "There is enough in the world for our need but not enough for our greed". This is increasingly obvious as levels of consumption escalate and population grows. There are only so many raw materials that the earth can yield; the oil supply is predicted to run out in less than 50 years. Large cash crop plantations are used to supply us with luxury goods whilst denying millions in the South any land to grow their food on. Unspoilt fertile land is turned into wasteland in a few years. Ever-rising levels of pollution are now exceeding those which the planet can sustain. Energy is in short supply, with the West using 50 times as much per person as the Third World. Consumerism does little to increase our happiness. TVs and cars are destroying communities. The excess amounts of food we eat is actually detrimental to our health. And then there's Christmas... when a million unwanted presents are thrown away and we eat until we can eat no more. On International NO SHOP Day, why not take to the streets and use the day to encourage others to think about the damaging effects of consumerism. With a group of people you could * do some amusing street theatre * leaflet shoppers * use the media or as an individual, you could * reduce your consumption and tell people why or think up an action of your own... You're only limited by your imagination! There are some resources available (various leaflets, texts, stickers and other materials) for use if you wish. Please send an SAE (and a donation for printing costs, if you can afford it) to the address below. Hard-copies and e-mail copies of this invite are being sent to greens, student groups, EF!, Third World First, green press, anti-consumerism groups, anarchist groups and others. *please pass it onto your friends, organize and ACT!* For an action pack, please send a A4 SAE to ENOUGH! (Manchester Anti-Consumerism Group), 13 Paton St, Manchester M1 2BA, UK. A donation, if you so wish, of one pound {Sterling} should cover our costs.
